Packaging Engineer – Raw Materials & Intercompany Packaging

About the role

The Packaging Engineer will develop, qualify and manage all raw‑material and intercompany packaging sourced from external suppliers. This role ensures that packaging meets technical specifications, quality standards, sustainability goals, operational needs and legal requirements while working closely with procurement, quality, logistics and production teams.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and maintain technical specifications for films, cartons, labels, pallets, liners, bags and other packaging components.
• Evaluate packaging performance, durability, compliance and compatibility with production equipment.
• Lead packaging trials, testing and validation activities for new product introductions and packaging changes.
• Review and approve supplier documentation such as technical data sheets and drawings.
• Conduct supplier capability assessments, qualification processes and root‑cause analyses for quality issues.
• Collaborate with Quality Assurance to implement corrective and preventive actions (CAPA).
• Identify cost‑reduction opportunities through material optimisation, design changes or supplier improvements.
• Support sustainability initiatives including lightweighting, recyclability and waste reduction.
• Provide technical support for packaging planning, inventory management and supplier performance reviews.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
• Several years of experience in packaging engineering within manufacturing, FMCG, pharma or industrial sectors.
• Fluent in English and Italian; German is a plus.

Required skills

• Proficiency with CAD tools.
• Experience using packaging testing equipment.
• Knowledge of ERP systems.
• Understanding of sustainability frameworks and eco‑design principles.
• Lean manufacturing and continuous‑improvement methodologies.
• Familiarity with quality systems, testing standards and regulatory requirements.
