Environmental Engineer (Waste Management)

About the role

The United Nations Logistic Base is seeking an Environmental Engineer to join the Environmental Technical Support Unit in Brindisi. Reporting to the Chief of the unit, the incumbent will support the implementation of the UN Environment Strategy for Peace Operations, focusing on waste management across field missions.

Key responsibilities

• Introduce and implement DOS Environmental Guidelines and lead the waste working group in missions.
• Provide technical assistance on waste management to field missions, including guidance on host‑country standards.
• Assist missions in budgeting for waste management systems, including hazardous waste.
• Prepare consolidated environmental action reports and identify problem areas.
• Review contracts and statements of work for engineering projects related to waste disposal.
• Develop conceptual designs, feasibility studies and multi‑year waste management plans.
• Assess existing waste infrastructure and propose technical solutions to reduce risks.
• Support training activities to build mission capacity on environmental objectives.
• Maintain liaison with UN agencies, local authorities and NGOs.
• Travel to field missions for up to three months as required.

Required profile

• Professional background in environmental engineering or a related field.
• Experience with waste management systems and environmental compliance.
• Ability to work under UN rules and procedures and to travel to remote locations.
• Strong analytical and reporting skills.
