Researchers in Paleoclimate Modelling for Environment–Society Dynamics

About the role

We are hiring two researchers to strengthen the climate component of the ERC Synergy Grant project EUROpest. The work focuses on high‑resolution palaeoclimate modelling and the analysis of past climate variability across Europe and the Mediterranean over the last millennium.

Key responsibilities

• Generate and analyse high‑resolution palaeoclimate simulations and reconstructed climate fields.
• Investigate climate variability, extremes and processes from continental to regional scales.
• Integrate climate datasets with archaeological, historical and genomic evidence within the project’s eco‑bio‑social framework.
• Collaborate with an international consortium of climate, history and epidemiology experts.

Required profile

• PhD or equivalent experience in climate science, atmospheric science, oceanography, environmental physics, applied mathematics, statistics or related fields.
• Strong background in atmospheric dynamics, ocean‑atmosphere interactions, regional climate processes or coupled climate systems.
• Experience working with numerical climate simulations and spatio‑temporal data.

Required skills

• Numerical climate simulations
• Earth system analysis
• Spatio‑temporal data analysis
• Atmospheric dynamics
• Ocean‑atmosphere interaction modelling
• Regional climate process modelling

What we offer

• Opportunity to work in an international, interdisciplinary research environment.
• Access to state‑of‑the‑art climate modelling resources at CMCC.
• Mentorship by senior scientists such as Dr Elena Xoplaki.
