Science Communication Specialist

About the role

The Science Communication Specialist will join IFOM’s Corporate Communication and Events team in Milan, reporting to the Head of Corporate Communication. The role translates cutting‑edge cancer research into clear, engaging content for scientists, donors, journalists and the general public.

Key responsibilities

• Write press releases, scientific news, and institutional materials that accurately reflect IFOM’s research.
• Manage scientific and institutional content across the website, social media channels and newsletters.
• Coordinate the editorial production of the IFOM Annual Report.
• Develop and maintain a deep understanding of IFOM’s research portfolio to ensure accuracy in all communications.
• Build and nurture relationships with science journalists and health correspondents in Italy and internationally, monitor media coverage and pitch stories.
• Support crisis communication by delivering rapid, accurate external messaging when needed.
• Assist with the editorial and communication aspects of scientific events, including public‑facing formats and media moments.
• Collaborate with researchers to gather information and create content for diverse audiences.
• Act as operational backup for the Head of Corporate Communication and Events.

Required profile

• 5–7 years of experience in science communication, science journalism or institutional communication.
• Proven portfolio of published work and media relationships.
• Ability to translate complex scientific concepts for non‑specialist audiences across written, digital and event formats.
• Experience with crisis communication in scientific or institutional settings.
• Strong organisational skills and capacity to manage multiple priorities.
• Genuine curiosity about science, particularly cancer research.
• University degree in a scientific discipline such as biology, biotechnology, medicine or a related field.

Required skills

• Familiarity with digital communication channels and AI tools used in editorial workflows.
