Senior Natural Resources Officer – Climate Change

About the role

The Senior Natural Resources Officer (Climate Change) will join the Office of Climate Change, Biodiversity and Environment (OCB) at FAO headquarters in Rome. The role focuses on integrating climate action across agricultural sectors, including crops, livestock, fisheries, aquaculture, and forestry, and supports member countries in addressing climate‑related challenges.

Key responsibilities

• Provide leadership and technical policy expertise for the planning, development and implementation of departmental programmes, projects and services aligned with the FAO Strategic Framework.
• Lead and coordinate multidisciplinary teams, cross‑departmental committees, project teams and working groups, and serve as secretariat for technical networks and international policy bodies.
• Analyse global and country‑specific requirements to inform the FAO Programme of Work, work plans, budgets and resourcing strategies.
• Design, implement and monitor programmes that develop evidence‑based strategies, tools, methodologies, databases and monitoring‑reporting frameworks.
• Oversee research and analytical activities that contribute to technical standards, international instruments, innovation, technical reports and publications.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in climate change mainstreaming and natural resources management within agricultural contexts.
• Proven ability to lead high‑level technical policy initiatives and multidisciplinary teams.
• Strong analytical skills to assess global and country‑level climate and biodiversity challenges.
• Experience in developing and managing programmes, budgets and strategic plans.
• Familiarity with major multilateral environmental agreements such as UNFCCC and CBD.
