VAT Manager – Indirect Tax Planning

About the role

Amazon is seeking a VAT Manager based in Milan to lead VAT planning and compliance for its Stores business in Italy and support Pan‑EU retail projects. The role reports to the Director of VAT for Retail and Operations across EMEA and involves regular interaction with senior tax, legal, finance and business leaders, as well as the Italian Tax Authority.

Key responsibilities

• Provide in‑depth technical advice on Italian and cross‑border VAT matters for new initiatives and existing operations.
• Support complex audit and controversy projects, engaging proactively with tax authorities and preparing responses.
• Collaborate with the VAT Compliance Team on strategic compliance topics and assist in planning and communication of tax‑related projects.
• Draft documentation to support analyses, decisions and reporting requirements.
• Work with Finance, Legal and Accounting teams to enable new business launches and ongoing retail operations across the Pan‑EU market.
• Maintain and develop relationships with the Italian Tax Authority and other EU tax bodies.

Required profile

• Significant experience in tax advisory (excluding day‑to‑day compliance) with a focus on international indirect tax.
• Strong knowledge of Italian VAT and EU VAT legislation and practical application.
• Background in a large accounting/consultancy firm, law firm, tax authority or in‑house tax function.
• Proven ability to communicate complex tax concepts to non‑tax stakeholders and senior leadership.
• Willingness to travel regularly across European locations.
