Temporary Associate Cataloguer – Contemporary & Modern Art

About the role

Sotheby's is seeking a Temporary Associate Cataloguer to support the Contemporary and Modern Art department in Milan. The role involves high‑standard research, documentation, and coordination to ensure accurate catalogue production for upcoming sales and exhibitions.

Key responsibilities

• Research and catalogue artworks, including physical inspection, provenance, and academic research.
• Prepare footnotes, essays, and talking points for each work.
• Assist with object vetting, conservation projects, and condition reporting.
• Coordinate catalogue layouts, photography, and liaise with the Catalogue Production team.
• Maintain communication with Specialists and Sale Managers to address logistical, installation, or authenticity issues.
• Support valuation data entry, client queries, and day‑to‑day project tasks.
• Provide client support during exhibitions, track interest, and execute bids.

Required profile

• Strong attention to detail and ability to conduct thorough art research.
• Excellent written communication for preparing cataloguing notes and client correspondence.
• Proactive coordination skills to work with specialists, conservators, and operations teams.
• Flexibility to handle ad‑hoc tasks such as framing, repairs, and on‑site support.
