Science Communication Specialist

About the role

IFOM, a leading non‑profit cancer research institute in Milan, is looking for a Science Communication Specialist to translate cutting‑edge research into compelling content for scientists, donors, journalists and the public. Reporting to the Head of Corporate Communication and Events, you will work closely with the communication team and researchers.

Key responsibilities

• Write press releases, scientific news and institutional content that accurately reflect IFOM’s research.
• Manage scientific and institutional content across web channels, social media and newsletters.
• Coordinate the editorial production of the IFOM Annual Report and Social Balance Sheet.
• Develop and maintain an in‑depth knowledge of IFOM’s research portfolio.
• Build and manage relationships with science journalists and health correspondents in Italy and internationally, monitor media coverage and pitch stories.
• Support crisis communication with rapid, accurate external messaging when needed.
• Assist in the editorial and communication aspects of scientific events, including public‑facing formats and media moments.
• Collaborate with researchers to gather information and create audience‑appropriate content.
• Act as operational backup for the Head of Corporate Communication and Events.

Required profile

• 5–7 years of experience in science communication, science journalism or institutional communication.
• Documented portfolio of media relationships and published work.
• Proven ability to translate complex scientific content for non‑specialist audiences across written, digital and event formats.
• Experience with or understanding of crisis communication in scientific or institutional contexts.
• Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
• Genuine curiosity about science, especially cancer research.
• University degree in a scientific field (biology, biotechnology, medicine or related).
