Fellow – Prison System Strengthening Project

About the role

The United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute (UNICRI) is seeking a Fellow to support its programme aimed at strengthening Mexico’s penitentiary system. Working under the Programme Officer, the Fellow will contribute to research, data analysis, capacity‑building activities and stakeholder engagement.

Key responsibilities

• Collect, review and analyse quantitative and qualitative data on prison systems in Mexico, Guatemala and the wider region.
• Support the preparation of research reports, policy briefs and training materials related to organized crime, alternative sentencing and rehabilitation measures.
• Assist in organising workshops, trainings and stakeholder meetings with government agencies, NGOs and international partners.
• Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of project activities, ensuring alignment with UNICRI’s objectives.

Required profile

• Advanced degree in criminology, law, public policy, sociology or a related field.
• Experience in criminal‑justice research, data collection and analysis.
• Familiarity with prison reform, organized crime dynamics and human‑rights‑based approaches.
• Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
