Legal Officer – Global Staff Union

About the role

The Global Staff Union (GSU) at the World Food Programme is seeking a Legal Officer to provide specialised legal support to union members. The role involves advising on staff‑related legal matters, preparing appeals, and contributing to policy development to improve staff conditions of service.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct extensive legal research and analysis on multi‑disciplinary, complex legal issues.
• Prepare and submit appeals to the Executive Director, the FAO Appeals Committee, and the ILOAT on behalf of GSU members.
• Review draft WFP policies and directives, identify legal implications, and advise the GSU Staff Council.
• Draft legal opinions, memoranda, and position papers to support union negotiations.
• Collaborate with senior management and other legal units to ensure consistent application of legal instruments.

Required profile

• Advanced university degree in Law (LL.M. or equivalent) with a focus on international or public law.
• Proven experience in legal research, policy analysis, and handling appeals within an international organization.
• Strong understanding of staff‑related legal frameworks and collective bargaining processes.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.
