Project Assistant (Cultural Mediation)

About the role

The Project Assistant (Cultural Mediation) will support the Italian Ministry of Interior – Public Security Department in emergency operations, ensuring fast and accurate first‑entry procedures within the MED.E.A. project. The role is based at either Gorizia or La Spezia and works under the supervision of the Programme Manager and Project Area Coordinator.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clerical and operational support to the Immigration Office, including registration, filing, and archiving of asylum applications.
• Assist in identification procedures by receiving and compiling asylum‑seekers’ claims, translating documents between Italian and migrants’ mother tongues, and informing beneficiaries about procedures.
• Offer impartial mediation assistance, convey general information on national asylum laws and administrative procedures, and help prevent conflicts between migrants and police officers.
• Prepare financial documentation related to the project (payments, reimbursements, travel) and submit regular activity reports to the project team.
• Maintain communication with the Project Area Coordinator, especially regarding vulnerable groups requiring specific protection and referral.
• Produce a detailed end‑of‑service report using the standard template provided by the project manager.

Required profile

• High school diploma with at least three years of relevant experience, or a bachelor’s degree with one year of relevant experience.
• Previous experience in migrant assistance, cultural mediation, or work with international organisations, EU agencies, or Italian Border Police is an advantage.
• Knowledge of asylum application procedures, including the C3 template, and familiarity with the work of the Immigration Office’s International Protection Section.
• Fluency in Italian and Bengali (both oral and written) and proficiency in one of IOM’s official languages (English, French, or Spanish).
