Senior Backend Engineer (Python) – Remote (Italy)

About the role

We are looking for an experienced Senior Backend Engineer with strong Python expertise to join our Digital Innovation Technology team on a 6‑month contract. The role is fully remote (based in Italy) and focuses on building robust backend services and IoT gateway applications that integrate heterogeneous devices into a unified platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain high‑performance backend services in Python.
• Build and support IoT gateway applications running on Yocto Linux.
• Implement communication layers using protocols such as Serial, TCP/UDP, RS485, Modbus, BACnet, and CAN.
• Ensure reliability with retry logic, error handling, and offline buffering.
• Integrate devices with cloud platforms via MQTT, HTTPS, and other cloud‑connectivity protocols.
• Analyze and reverse‑engineer legacy or undocumented HVAC/building‑automation protocols.
• Map device data to Digital Twin models and collaborate with cloud and mobile teams.
• Perform end‑to‑end testing, code reviews, debugging, and performance tuning.
• Document technical solutions and share knowledge across firmware, cloud, app, and product teams.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• 5+ years of professional backend development experience.
• Advanced Python development with production‑grade systems.
• Strong experience with Docker and Kubernetes infrastructures.
• Solid knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases (PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis).
• Proven experience working with IoT systems and communication protocols.
• Fluent English communication skills; Italian proficiency required.
