Automation Engineer – Advanced Port Systems

About the role

The Automation Engineer will join the Asset Maintenance team at APM Terminals Vado Gateway, supporting the reliability and performance of highly automated container terminal systems.

Key responsibilities

• Support project teams and end users during implementation of automated systems and technologies.
• Design, test, commission and continuously improve industrial automation systems, networks and related infrastructure.
• Troubleshoot industrial network and wireless communication issues, documenting solutions.
• Monitor risks and opportunities during projects, preparing reports and recommending preventive actions.
• Ensure compliance with IT and OT service management processes and contribute to their improvement.
• Participate in R&D initiatives to enhance automation system performance and reliability.
• Coordinate with OEMs, system integrators, contractors and suppliers for successful integration.
• Drive equipment reliability through fault analysis, root‑cause investigations and corrective actions.
• Monitor and analyse equipment reliability and availability KPIs to support long‑term strategies.

Required profile

• Degree in Automation Engineering, Electronic Engineering or equivalent technical experience.
• Experience with highly automated electromechanical systems and a good understanding of electrical schematics.
• Knowledge of industrial networking protocols such as TCP/IP, UDP and Modbus.
• Basic programming skills in at least one language (e.g., Python, C++, C#, JavaScript, VB6).
• Strong analytical, problem‑solving and documentation abilities.
• Fluency in English, both written and spoken.

• Siemens automation products and PLCs.
• Electrical components: motors, actuators, circuit breakers, three‑phase systems.
• Electronic devices, drives/inverters, motor modules, I/O components.
• Industrial networking and communication protocols (TCP/IP, UDP, Modbus).
• Programming languages: Python, C++, C#, JavaScript, VB6.
