Backend Cloud Engineer — AWS Serverless (Remote)

About the role

EverUp is a UK‑based startup building a rewarding gift‑card shopping experience. We are looking for a senior Backend Cloud Engineer to evolve and maintain our serverless AWS backend that powers payments, wallets, rewards and near‑real‑time features for our mobile and web apps.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain and evolve AWS Lambda microservices behind API Gateway (REST & WebSocket) and IoT Core, including Cognito authentication.
• Design, optimise and migrate data models in DynamoDB and MySQL (RDS), handling indexes and query performance.
• Manage asynchronous workflows with SQS/SNS, ensuring idempotency, DLQs and retries.
• Keep observability healthy using CloudWatch metrics, logs and alarms.
• Maintain and improve infrastructure‑as‑code (AWS SAM/CloudFormation) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Integrate and support third‑party fintech, open‑banking, notification, fraud and analytics services.
• Troubleshoot production incidents, drive root‑cause analyses and create preventive runbooks.
• Enforce security best practices such as least‑privilege IAM, secret management and input validation.

Required profile

• 8+ years building and operating production back‑end systems.
• 4+ years of hands‑on experience with AWS serverless services (Lambda, API Gateway, DynamoDB).
• Strong proficiency in JavaScript/Node.js and REST API design.
• Solid SQL/NoSQL expertise, including schema design and query tuning.
• Experience with IaC (SAM/CloudFormation) and CI/CD (CodePipeline).
• Security‑first mindset and solid debugging skills (OWASP awareness).
• Familiarity with WebSocket connections, real‑time features, and fintech/fraud integrations.
• Experience with observability practices, SLOs and monitoring dashboards.
• Exposure to Elastic Beanstalk and data‑pipeline/warehousing concepts.
