Junior Mechanical Engineer – Rail Industry

About the role

Hitachi Rail is seeking a motivated Junior Mechanical Engineer to join its Rolling Stock Engineering Department in Italy. The role offers exposure to railway vehicle design, integration and testing within a fast‑paced, multicultural environment.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare System Requirements Specifications (SyRS) for mechanical components.
• Analyse and assess technical proposals from suppliers.
• Develop and verify mechanical installation, integration, and routing drawings.
• Conduct internal and supplier design reviews under supervision.
• Attend system stand‑alone type tests and review test reports.
• Support manufacturing, testing and validation phases.
• Review design documentation with customers and suppliers.
• Produce structural drawings for carbody shells, bogie frames and other components.
• Prepare equipment layout, mechanical routing and Bill of Materials (BoM).
• Ensure compliance with railway regulations, standards (e.g., EN 15085) and project constraints.
• Prepare documentation for vehicle approval and assist the homologation phase.

Required profile

• Basic knowledge of mechanical disciplines, design verification and validation methods.
• Familiarity with mechanical CAD systems (Catia or Creo preferred).
• Understanding of piping systems, fittings and joint design.
• Awareness of noise/vibration modelling for mechanical components.
• Knowledge of welded structure design rules (EN 15085) and PLM tools (Windchill preferred).
• Proficiency with office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
• Ability to work collaboratively in an international, fast‑moving team.
• Willingness to travel occasionally for short‑term national or international assignments.
