R&D Associate Engineer – People Protection

About the role

This is a temporary, hybrid contract position reporting to the R&D Team Lead, within the Product Care team of ABB Smart Buildings in Vittuone (Milan), Italy. You will contribute to the continuous improvement of the People Protection product portfolio, working across the product development cycle from concept and 3D design to engineering analysis, prototyping, testing and industrialization support. The role is accountable to R&D, Product Care, Quality, Operations, Purchasing, Manufacturing Engineering, laboratories and suppliers.

Key responsibilities

• Support Product Care activities for existing products, ensuring technical robustness, quality, competitiveness and continuous improvement.
• Develop and modify 3D CAD models and technical documentation, and perform engineering studies and simulations to evaluate performance, reliability and manufacturability.
• Design, build and validate prototypes with laboratories, suppliers and manufacturing teams, and support root cause analysis and cost reduction.
• Explore and apply new technologies, materials, digital engineering methods and AI-based approaches to improve design efficiency and product development.

Required profile

• Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent engineering qualification.
• Interest in digital engineering, artificial intelligence and data-driven product development; knowledge of MATLAB is a plus.
• Comfortable communicating in Italian and English, written and spoken.
• Curious, motivated and willing to learn in a collaborative international environment.

Required skills

• Good knowledge of 3D CAD design; experience with CATIA V5 or Creo is highly appreciated.
• Basic knowledge of structural, thermal or multiphysics simulation; prototype development, testing or product validation experience is an advantage.
• Knowledge of SAP and PLM/PDM systems, and good command of Microsoft Office tools.
