AI Engineer

About the role

You will take our AI stack and lead its development and customisation for the Italian market. This is a builder‑and‑doer role where you will design, test and implement practical, compliant agentic AI solutions on top of foundation models for document understanding, classification, retrieval of procedures and tariff material, and multi‑step operational agents.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and customise AI solutions for the Italian market from prototype to production ownership.
• Identify automation and decision‑support opportunities across customs processes and size them realistically before building.
• Design solutions using generative AI and large language models – retrieval, tool calling, structured extraction, and agentic workflows.
• Own evaluation: define success metrics before release and monitor regressions.
• Manage pilots, set clear criteria for scaling or terminating them, and monitor performance, inference cost, latency and business impact.
• Collaborate with local teams, Group functions and technology partners while ensuring privacy, security and AI‑governance compliance with the EU AI Act.

Required profile

• Strong Python and SQL expertise with production‑grade code ownership.
• Demonstrable experience integrating large language models into production systems (prompt design, retrieval‑augmented generation, structured output, graceful failure handling).
• Practical experience with at least one major cloud AI platform (Azure AI, AWS Bedrock or Google Vertex).
• Solid full‑stack backend engineering fundamentals – APIs, data pipelines, testing, CI/CD.
• Professional fluency in English and strong communication skills for working with customs operations staff.
