Field Service Engineer - Analytical Instruments

About the role

Cellply is looking for a Field Service Engineer in Bologna, one of its first dedicated engineers. The role sits at the intersection of production, R&D and customer support, helping to deliver, install and maintain complex analytical instruments. It starts with a mix of in-house and on-site work, then becomes increasingly field-focused as the installed base grows, with travel rising from below 50% to above 50%. The engineer works mainly across Europe and the Middle East, with possible expansion to North America and APAC.

Key responsibilities

• In-house: test, verify and qualify instruments before installation, supporting production in diagnosing and resolving technical issues
• Perform calibration and maintenance of instruments in-house, and contribute to improving testing, calibration and installation procedures
• Collaborate with R&D and engineering on complex technical issues, interface with external suppliers, and capture customer insights
• On-site: install, maintain, repair and upgrade VivaCyte systems at customer sites, providing remote and on-site technical support
• Manage logistics for systems, spare parts and tools, and plan, document and track all service activities

Required profile

• Diploma or degree in Mechanical, Automation/Mechatronics, Biomedical Engineering or an equivalent technical discipline
• 3-5 years of relevant experience, ideally in field service or manufacturing and testing of complex analytical, life-science or high-tech instrumentation
• Good written and spoken English; additional languages are a plus
• Willingness to travel, currently below 50% and expected to grow above 50%
• Comfortable in a fast-paced start-up environment

Required skills

• Solid hands-on technical ability across mechanical and electrical systems
• Experience with optical/imaging units or microfluidics is a strong plus
• Problem-solving and root-cause analysis skills
• Customer-first communication and interpersonal skills
• Service ticketing or service-management systems experience is a plus
