Robotics Senior Mechanical Designer

About the role

This Senior Mechanical Designer role sits within ABB's Robotics business, which is preparing for its acquisition by SoftBank Group. It reports to the Senior Engineering Manager and contributes to the Robotics Automation Division (Robotics & Discrete Automation, Robotics Operations in Italy). The work model is hybrid (#LI-Hybrid). Main stakeholders include the Proposal & Sales Support Team, Project Management, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing & Supply Chain, Installation & Commissioning teams, customers and system integrators.

Key responsibilities

• Create, modify and analyse the design of equipment, systems or installations, including specifications for manufacturing, fabrication or construction, and optimise designs to meet updated standards.
• Apply design thinking or design for excellence concepts in projects.
• Perform project peer reviews using checklists to verify designs against applicable standards and engineering guidelines.
• Create standard processes and tools to promote reuse of technical solutions, innovation and productivity in the design team.
• Develop work plans and cost estimates for the portfolio of projects.
• Review complete project documents for conformity, safety, cybersecurity and quality assurance requirements.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in mechanical engineering and machine design, preferably in robotic cells, automation systems or special-purpose machinery.
• Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent technical qualification.
• Ability to communicate in Italian and English.
• Availability to travel occasionally for customer meetings and site activities.

Required skills

• Highly skilled in 3D mechanical design and machine design methodologies and engineering standards in industrial automation and robotics.
• Advanced knowledge of Autodesk Inventor, AutoCAD and PLM/PDM tools.
